Hubcaps, or also referred to as wheel covers, are spherical plates that covers the center of a wheel. Today, hubcaps are made from different materials, including aluminum, steel and plastic. Of the many hubcap materials, what most people prefer are the aluminum hubcaps as they are durable and those made of high grade plastics as they are more flexible.
Over the years, the look of hubcaps changed from one form to another. There were wheel covers that were about 4" in diameter and there were some that were so big they actually covered the whole tire. Car enthusiasts and experts have come up with the most elegant and extravagant designs for hubcaps, while others came up with very functional designs. Hubcaps have not only become a motor vehicle accessory but they have also become a fashion statement for some.
Though most people in today's automobile society view hubcaps as fashion accessories, this equipment were used for more practical and functional purposes. In the early years of the automobile industry, hubcaps were used as protective covers of the axles' hubs located on the wheels. They were used primarily to prevent dirt and grime from making contact with the inner parts of the wheels, which in turn protects the wheels from gradual damage.
These days, hubcaps or wheel covers still maintain their primary function. They still protect the wheels from dirt and harmful particles and they keep the bearings and the spindle nuts in top shape. The difference with today's hubcaps is that they are also designed to be fashionable that they've become a fashion accessory as well as necessary equipment.

Indeed, nowadays, customers have more choices when it comes to hubcap designs. Among all the types of hubcaps, two kinds of the most famous with customers are the clip-on wheel covers and the bolt-on ones. The clip-on hubcaps have spring steel clips that are designed to attach to the tires. The bolt-on hubcaps come with threaded fasteners which can hold onto the tires more firmly than the latter. Clip-on hubcaps have a tendency to break off when the car swerves or turns too hard.
Customers can go online to search for the kind of hubcap that will fit their car and their style. Online stores provide customers plenty of information as to which hubcap would fit a certain make and model of a car. This makes it easier for people to choose the right kind of wheel cover for them.
